MARSEILLE SOAP

TRUTH AND FALSE ABOUT MARSEILLE SOAP

Marseille soap is in a way a descendant of Aleppo soap. As you can imagine, it is made from olive oil, which is very abundant in the Marseille region. It is olive oil obtained from local olives that give the traditional Marseille soap a very green color. In the early days, soda used to perform saponification was obtained from algae and salicornia ashes.

The water used in the production of Marseille soap was salty water, so it was produced especially at the seaside in the early days. At that time, this very specific recipe was used for the production of Marseille soap. This was a feature that made it the first AOC type soap. (It is a technical abbreviation used in the meaning of the term “Marseille soap” for soaps made only from olive oil in the Marseille region. And it is a certificate showing the construction technique and its condition.

But as time went on, the raw materials used changed a lot as the originality went away. As early as 1820, coconut oil, sesame oil, and palm oil began to replace olive oil in soap compositions. From then on it became difficult to find original soap made according to the traditional recipe. Today, it no longer benefits from an AOC, so producers (many of them are far from Marseille!) Are empowered to prepare and market a soap under the name “Marseille soap” without even a drop of olive oil.

Today, the number of soap-producing workshops in Marseille has decreased considerably. Production mostly shifted to countries that are not related to this soap such as China, Germany, Spain, Greece and Malaysia.
